Almost everyone unfamiliar with magnesium asks me "How do I know I'm magnesium deficient?" So, I thought I would address this question today.
The Simple Answer
The simple answer to whether you are magnesium deficient is, "Yes." I recently attended the International Society for the Development of Research on Magnesium conference. In Dr. Gopal Kumar's presentation, he said that magnesium deficient diets are common. He went so far as to state that more than 50% of the US population is magnesium deficient, although I think that number could be up to 80%. His information makes sense to me since I know that there is less than half of the magnesium in soil than there was 100 years ago. So, even when you eat local, seasonal, and organic, you may not even get the RDA for magnesium in your diet.
What Is the RDA for Magnesium?
The RDA for magnesium is approximately 310 mg per day. That is why the maintenance dose for my mineral product, ReMag, is one teaspoon a day. (There are 300 mg of magnesium in every teaspoon of ReMag.) So, when a healthy person wants to maintain/expand wellness, they should use one teaspoon of ReMag a day.
Why Is Magnesium So Important?
As Dr. Kumar mentioned in the conference I attended, they have found that magnesium is a co-factor for more than 1,000 enzyme reactions that provide vital metabolic functions in the body. Additionally, magnesium regulates genomic stability, energy status and antioxidant capacity of the cell. Moreover, magnesium and calcium have similar chemical properties, but their role in biological systems is counterintuitively antagonistic. This antagonism drives functions such as relaxing (magnesium) and contracting (calcium) muscles. Think of your heart beating, your knee bending and straightening, and you'll understand the relationship between magnesium and calcium.
What Does Magnesium Deficiency Look Like?
